On July 4, 1991, Paul Broussard was beaten and stabbed to death by 10 teenagers from The Woodlands wielding nail-studded 2x4's simply because he was gay. The Houston Police Department initially refused to label the murder a hate crime and was not going to investigate. One week later, on July 13, 1991, QUEER NATION HOUSTON staged a "Take Back the Streets" march protesting Broussard's gay-bashing murder. This was a response that included outraged members of the community, both gay and straight. The morning following the demonstration, HPD reversed its decision and labeled the murder a hate crime. QUEER NATION was a grassroots, militant direct action group based in LGBTIQ communities.
