Clear and coated heads both have their pluses depending on the sound you are going for.

For the people here saying coated heads have less ring, just compare the tom sound here with most other VC videos where he is playing clear heads. It is obvious to me that the tone is more open and less defined here with the coated heads.
The toms also have more ring to them here.
Having spent many hours in the studio tweeking drums and fussing with the overtones the mics were picking up, I tried recording with both coated and clear heads.

Don't let the fact that it's a PERFORMANCE detract from the musical content. Are you certain you comprehend what's going on here? A live performance will always be more animated than a sterile studio session.
