Thursday's on ABC's Grey's Anatomy, he's Dr. Derek Shepherd, or Dr. McDreamy. But Friday at Watkins Glen, he was McDreamy behind the wheel. Patrick Dempsey was on the track getting ready for this weekend's Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen Race. "I've always been a fan of racing," Dempsey told 13WHAM on Friday. "I watched a lot of it on speed channel and I had an opportunity, my wife gave me a three day competition course at Skip Barber and that sort of opened the door to racing."
Dempsey has worked his way up through the racing ranks, starting with smaller series racing, all the way up to what is called the Rolex Series, a road course racing series in North America. So what's it like when Dr. McDreamy is flying around the track in his Mazda MXC? "You have to deal with the temperature, your situational awareness, what's going on around you and it's a physical workout," Dempsey noted. "The G-loading, and you're shifting and breaking, and there's a lot of pressure on the body."
So is Dempsey just another celebrity with a lot of money with an expensive hobby? Not really. When it comes to auto racing, Dempsey owns his own team and continues to get better at a sport he started before fans ever knew him as Dr. McDreamy. "Thank god I started prior to the success of Grey's Anatomy. A lot of drivers who've been around a while have been my coaches over the past few years. I'm slowly earning my stripes and I think getting a lot of respect out there by having good finishes.
Dempsey has finished as high as 7th in his Rolex racing career, and thinks he'll only getter better and better, especially this year since he has taken some time off from acting to concentrate on his racing career. "The show (Grey's Anatomy) is really good at allowing me to get out and race. Without their support and the support of my family I couldn't do it," Dempsey said.
Just because he's taken some time off doesn't mean he won't return to Grey's in the future, Dempsey will continue his role as the love interest of one of the shows other major characters, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). We asked Dempsey if there are any plans for the two characters to finally get married, something that has been hinted at for several seasons. "I sure hope so. I don't know if I can do another season like that," Dempsey laughed before getting back to work on his car.
For now, the only operating he plans on doing is behind the wheel.
