Fixing the Keykeeper's Truck - Part 1

Imagine that...something else broke on the Keykeeper's truck.

This time it is the fuel pump, which started blowing fuses out of the blue.

We decided to put a new pump in since the gas gauge sending unit wasn't working. Upon removing the old pump, we found that the arm attached to the float had broken off and was shorting across the fuel pump motor terminals.

Fuel pumps just about always happen to fail when you've got a full tank of gasoline. Instead of doing things the hard way and trying to drain or drop a heavy tank full of gasoline, here's an easier way--just take the bed off, get it away from the truck and there's your fuel pump. Units like the one on this truck just twist out and unplug from the wiring harness.

This didn't get finished because at some point, the truck had rusted out fuel lines coming off the pump, causing it to leak gas from the top of the tank. Fixing that involved patching the break in the pipe, but now the new fuel pump doesn't fit the repaired pipe. So the fun will continue. (The pipe fix is actually where the still photos you may have seen in my earlier truck bed removal video came from.)

Yes it is. I should make a video about it sometime. It's in pretty good shape...if you don't count the fact that the bottom end of the engine came unglued one day while going down the road. It wasn't low or out of oil--something must have been worn out. We started to fix it and have never finished.
