Apparently John Ogdon regarded this as "...the most exalted, intense and sublimely powerful of all Chopin’s compositions..." and I would agree. It has everything: passion, delicacy, profundity, sublime structure, complexity, direction, dumbfounding beauty and that most Chopinesque of qualities - extreme refinement. In short, words fail one. Let Khatia Buniatishvili do the speaking here - she does it with very great eloquence.
I've never seen someone so wholly enveloped by the music they're playing. There are many who fake that connection with its accompanying gestures, but Katia's is so real, so strong, so magical that here I am watching a poor reproduction of the original moment, three years after it really happened, and I have gooseflesh all over my body. Suddenly, art makes sense. Thank you, Katia.
@Jauhara I'd rather have this recording of the performance than none at all, but I know what you mean. Parts of the Haydn sonata from the same competition have this insane metallic ringing reverbas well,it is beyond distracting, in fact it draws the life out of the performance...though you can still hear that this is a wonderful interpretation.I wish there were a cleaner version to be found here on Youtube.She really is an incredible artist, and what is even better is that she is still so young.
The recording might not be the best but her technique is unbelievably impeccable. Please don't make this video go away! I have watched it close to 20 times and I keep revisiting it because of her magical timing and beautiful technique. She's fantastic.
This is absolutely the worst recording of this beautiful performance. It is like chewing on tin foil. Please make it go away and replace it with a better recording.
@Caramellatta
Have you tried the version by Adam Neiman?
It's an excellent one.
