583 didn't break down... Listen carefully as the Surfliner(s) pull(s) out and you'll notice both F59s are running and providing power. 583 struck some (large) debris which resulted in damage to the Cab Car rendering it unable to lead. 785 was backed in on top of it and used essentially as a stand-in cab car to get the train into LA.
