SD Initiative Press Conference 11-23-09 Part II

Surrounded by members of Associated General Contractors of San Diego (Chapter and Apprenticeship and Training Trust), Associated Builders and Contractors of San Diego (Chapter and Apprenticeship Training Trust), the Western Electrical Contractors Association (WECA), the Coalition for Fair Employment in Construction (CFEC), the National Association of Minority Contractors, and the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce, San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio explained why we were bringing this issue before voters on the November 2010 ballot. From bringing openness and transparency back to City contracts to ending Big Labor's stranglehold on a City they have single handedly placed on the door step of bankruptcy, this amendment is a shot across the bow of all those who put taxpayers and accountability second to back room deals and payoffs to Big Labor special interests.

For the merit shop this charter amendment will also ban any labor agreements that force workers to pay union dues or pay into union benefit programs as a condition of employment. It's a win-win for everyone (except Big Labor bosses who now have another front to fight on).

Speakers at the event were Laura Nelson of Cass Construction representing ABC of San Diego, Scott Brady of Brady Companies/San Diego representing AGC of San Diego, Donell Johnson of Johnson Maintenance and Janitorial Service representing the National Association of Minority Contractors, and James Ray of Brady Company/San Diego speaking on behalf of the merit shop apprentices.
