Heres 1 for you !!
99% of factory finishes now are water based !! Even the clear no activator/hardner
so why does that not rub off with thinners !!
leave that one with you

If we want to get technical then here goes 2 Pack Acrylic Enamel correct name or 2k is made up of 2 different resins ACRYLIC AND MELAMINE which is mixed with another resin Poly Isocyanate (Hardner) which causes a chemical reaction which make the resins bind and go hard
1k or Single stage is just Acrylic Enamel which uses thinners which evapourate and the paint hardens that way

I didnt say that i said that 2k is Acrylic based !!
I worked for Standox for 20 years so know whats what

i think your mistaken dude. Cars are factory baked because the paint system they use (2K/2 pac). 2K systems use a hardener in the paint/clear to harden the paint. This process begins soon after the hardener is mixed in with the colour/clear. Depending on the paint system and product this can take a few minutes right up to a few hours to complete. All baking does is to speed up the process. Acrylic however does not harden like 2K. Bake it for as long as you like... thinners will take it off.

The clear we use (standox) is very low VOC anyway
but we are going to be completly waterbased by end of the year

cant wait for the stone chip one. i need it desperately

got my self a 6' DA palm sander yesterday at super cheep auto started attacking my hood where the clear had started lifting , was thinking about feathering it out and doing a patch job, but the da with a small compressor did a great job and the old clear came off easily , so will respray my whole hood it also has some minor dents that need to be filled

Yeah just air blowers , but a good down draught booth is ok
lots of air flow or infrared panel dryers
its certainly alot quicker than solvent based as no flash time

I find it strange that they introduced waterbase to lower the emissions from painting but then you have to use a 2K clear that is releasing VOC's into the air anyway. I have been told that shops were having to spend money on expensive equipment and learn new methods just to use a waterbase basecoat and alot of shops closed down cause of this..

Have you tried any of the water based paints yet ?
Thats all we use now and its brilliant 1.5 passes and thats ur basecoat done !!
still use 2k clear coat to finish

I have heard that it needs special drying techniques and machines otherwise it wont dry. Concept have developed a LOW VOC basecoat that has coverage just as good as the waterbase but its a solvent base. It does not need special spray booths or any other expense that comes with setting up a waterbase shop. Its approved in california but not sure if its legal in Europe.

the main reason why paint will rub off with thinners is that its not been baked !!
car factory finish is baked so wont come off with thinners
just like a car thats been painted in a booth and baked the thinners wont touch that either

can I ask where you are getting your information from.
