Eddie the Lovebird gets a wing clip

Looks worse than it is... it doesn't hurt. Must make sure you don't cut a blood feather. This certified avian vet left Eddie's wings a little longer so he can glide to the floor. A crash landing can hurt your pett bird.

I don't know how many more ways to write this, but the bird can still fly! He can just not get much height. This keeps his perfect neck out of the ceiling fans. You can leave your bird fully flighted if you like, but I will warn you that household accidents are the #1 killer of pet birds.

Actually, Eddie can fly very well with his wing clips. If you only trim the primary flight feathers, a lovebird will still be able to fly, he will just not be able to gain height. This keeps my bird safe by keeping him out of trouble, and keeps his neck out of the ceiling fans. What works for one situation may not work for another. Household accidents are the #1 pet bird killer. 75% of those are from flighted birds either flying out windows, into plate glass windows, etc. Teflon pans are #2

A lovebird needs to have the wings clipped each molt. Which can be as often as 3 times a year, or as infrequently as once.

The lovebird is a great flier because their bodies are so lightweight. Therefore, my guys can fly after only one grows back. I do the clips myself now, and I clip each one feather as it grows out.

Paul is right, it is very dangerous for a bird to fly freely in the home. Even with a wing clip (if done conservatively) the bird can still fly. Eddie can only fly in a straight line, he can't get height. He also can only fly shorter distances. This keeps him from flying into windows, and prevents decapitation from a ceiling fan. He enjoys lots of out of cage time, kisses and training sessions which are only possible because of his clip!

That depends... Mine is about $275 for a gram stain (fecal sample), CBC (standard bloodwork panel) and physical exam. Some pet stores (like Petsmart) have vets in house that treat for much less. Those vets are usually not avian certified though, and therefore can't take blood.

I am NOT against people who DONT want their bird's wings trimmed, But i AM NOT against people who do want them trimmed either. It doesnt hurt the bird, and its NOT like cutting off hands or feet. They still get around just as well with their feet. I clip my Bird's wings because they fly into walls and thats extremely dangerous. So you people who are making bad comments about wing clipping, Its the owner's choice, not yours.

You might be able to take you bird out flighted and it might work out well for some time. But your little bird is not wild and cannot become wild the moment it flies out the window. Wild birds have the entire sky to roam. They know how to obtain food and often fly in flocks , often teaching each other and offering some protection. Birds who are tame and have access to the outside of their cage can get caught in dangerous places in the home and if it does get out, may not be able to find it's wa

also my friends extremely tame parrotlet died tragically because she didn't clip his wings. He spooked at something or was just having a joy fly and flew into a boiling pot of water on the stove. she got him out immediately but it was still too late. and i see far too many posts and ads about parrots, 'tiels, and budgies that have flown off and the owner is trying to find them. save the parrots and trim their damn wings!

If all a bird knows his entire life is the safety of a home, occasional outings, and regularly clipped wings, he will not be 'sad' or not feel like he isnt free because he doesn't know anything else. Trimming your birds wings is a necessary safety precaution. and if you love your birds and dont want to lose them then you will trim their wings, for THEIR sake.

just clipped my birds wing an hour ago or so. I cut quiet a big portion of the flight feathers, the big ones which are the ones you are trimming because my birds can still fly well if I only trim a small portion, they can sltill softly decend and land on the ground and controll the direction of their decent but they can fly up.

@Nasser90santour it is NOTHING like cutting of a birds hands! they cant even feel it. And if they fly there are alot of risks.they could fly into cieling fans, windows, or walls and they could get seriously hurt or they could die. BUT im really glad you play and care for your bird so much! :) sounds like its in good hands!! :)

Thats actually not true, these birds are meant to be pets, therfore, its a good idea for them to get their wings clipped so that they dont fly out of their cage and crash into walls and break their necks, and dont worry the birds wings always grow back :]

What did you think that birds are made for captivity in house or what :)? Would this happen outside the house? No it would not! It not good if they canno fly. They must fly!
