Hagia Sophia (the Church of Holy Wisdom), now known as the Ayasofya Museum, is a former Eastern Orthodox church converted to a mosque in 1453, converted into a museum in 1935, in the Turkish city of Istanbul. It is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest buildings of the world and sometimes considered the Eighth Wonder of the World. Its conquest by the Ottomans at the fall of Constantinople is considered one of the great tragedies of Christianity by the Greek Orthodox faithful.

  • Turkey has an amazing history. It is just unfortunate for them that none of it is theirs. That has to be upsetting at a subconscious level to the Turks. "Come to Turkey and see all of our historic sites that out ancestors had absolutely nothing to do with!" That has to hurt...

  • @DelijaIzKrajine Eygpt was a powerfull and strong econonic and military power for along time in some shape or form. Even today its has large powerful military and owns the Suez canal.

  • @ilovethe80snole Actually when the Turks conquered what its modern day "Turkey" from the Byzantines in the 12th-13th century, it was a military conquest and its is shown that only a few hundred thousand actual Turks settled there. The vast majority of its population was native and eventually labelled as "Turks" even though they never are actually from the Turk race. The vast majority have western "Turks" have strong Greek genetics. You also have armenian and Kurds in Turkey.

  • @DeathBlade182 The Byzantine Empire was the Eastern half of the Roman Empire. After Rome's fall, it continued as the Roman Empire for a 1000 years. The term "Byzantine Empire" came about by a 19th century French historian who tried to differentiate with the old empire because it was Greek speaking, Christian, Greek in culture, and did not include Rome. They considered themselves Roman and so did everyone else. The majority of the people in the empire were Greek, Slavic, and Armenian.

  • @ilovethe80snole Do you ever wonder who inhabited Turkey before the Greeks? And before them? Nations come and go.
