The Wa ethnic minority, which has a history of over 3000 years, primarily resides in the mountains of Yunnan Province in southern China. The power of nature is important to the Wa people, as they believe elements such as water, trees and mountains all have spirits. The colors red and black are prevalent in Wa clothing, and women often wear silver or bamboo necklaces and bracelets. Festivals last for several days as people dance to a singer's call and the varying beat of drums, and the women are famous for swinging their beautiful long hair as they dance. This piece is inspired by the grand, uninhibited movements of the Wa people as they embrace both the beauty of nature and the struggle against it.
This was amazing.. all student choreographed? Everything from formations, energy, and even lighting was so well executed! How does your troupe publicize/get so many people to participate? I'm from WashU and we have a similar event (Lunar New Year Festival)... we definitely can't pull off something as good as this. Advice would be appreciated!! :D
