The water drop was much worse when placed in a rack and a dark room. This was definitely more of a mental torture than physical pain. Very interesting nonetheless. Another type of torture was invented by the chinese using a fast growing bamboo seed. The seed would be planted under the victim who is tied to the ground, then in a couple days the sharpened bamboo stalk would begin penetrating the skin. A couple days after that, the stalk would be all the through the victim. Who can say shish-kabob?

I'm afraid in medieval England a person who refused to enter a plea (guilty or not guilty) could be tortured until he did - or he died.
