Lake Express High Speed Ferry - Milwaukee WI Winter Berth Trip - HD timelapse

Timelapse of the Lake Express high speed ferry making its annual voyage from its Milwaukee terminal to the site of its winter layup in the Menomonee River Valley - Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Lake Express began service in 2004 as the first high speed auto and passenger ferry to operate between US ports. It has completed more than 5,000 Lake Michigan crossings between Milwaukee, WI and Muskegon, MI and has carried more than 600,000 since its inaugural voyage June 1, 2004.

Timelapse created from 1,583 still photos taken with a Canon Digital Rebel XTi and a modified TC-80NC timer controller. Shots were taken 2 seconds apart over the course of roughly 53 minutes.

Batch retouched in Photoshop and assembled with Adobe Premiere Elements, 3 frames per photo; effectively 10fps.

Is this the ferry we're taking from the smart rally? I didn't know - my plan is to follow the smart in front of me. :)

When is the smart rally?  We'd love to have you on board. Car clubs and motorcycle groups are a lot of fun on the ship; the photos would be really great.

The whole trip takes about 45 minutes - a good portion of the run is easy - until we reach the railroad bridge, we're often delayed a bit as we wait for Amtrak to come through. And then from there on it it's slow going as the channel is very narrow - we take great care from around the Harley-Davidson museum on into the site of the winter berth.

... what a wonderful video.. but sad in a way that you see that how milwaukee was once long ago a freight shipping/manufacturing hub with river as a highway and the warehouses along the river that are now yuppie condos actually unloaded freight... what a difference 50 years makes :)
