Music Composer: R D Burman
Original Vocalist: Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar
Harmonica, Recording, Camera, Editing: Sumanta Basu
This song, composed by Rahul Deb Burman, is a favourite to a large number of people across the globe. I'm a sure, person who doesn't speak Hindi, love this song as well. This is one of such rare compositions; those leave no scope for the listeners of not loving it. I too loved this song ever since I heard it. Smt. Lata Mangeshkar sung it wonderfully. But when Kishore Kumar joined with Lata ji in the last Antara, the song became all new, a different experience to me every time I listened to it.
Well, I never thought of playing this song before. I had an idea (don't know why), that this song is only meant for singing, it won't sound nice it I try to play it on my harmonica. A few days back, after I bought a new harmonica, I suddenly started humming this tune (again, I don't know why), and thought of trying this song on my new Larry Adler Pro.
Everything that I try in my life, I try to visualise things before I do. Here, in music also, before I play anything, I nurture the possible output inside my head...
After I decided to play this song for the first time; while I was thinking of it and building up the tune in my head, I called Swarup Da, Swarup Mitra one evening, to discuss the notes used in a particular phrase in the composition. He was glad over the phone to receive my call, and asked me to listen to his rendition to this song, as he recorded it before. I told him that I have heard some of his recordings, but not this one. He said that it will be available in Ramana's channel on the YouTube. I said that I will find it out and listen to it. But I did not.
Purposefully, I did not want to listen to his rendition just before I record it. If I had heard his record just before my try, it was very much possible for me to follow his 'playing style' or his 'attitude towards the composition' in my sub-conscience. I tried to avoid that. I wanted to let the song grow up within me.
Now that I recorded the song, I heard his rendition again and again [in Ramana's YouTube channel] and found it pretty nice. I've liked his approach towards the composition as well, which is far different from mine.
One more thing I've done with this recording, which I try not to do in general... I have played the song from a pretty difficult key (on a C# harmonica) to match the music track.... very unlike me! I harp on comfortable playing all the time!
Dialectics???? Ha ha! I just tested my new instrument in difficult situations, comrades!
Enjoy!
