Star eater attacks prey from a long distance by attracting them to it using a bioluminescent lure located under its jaw. In an environment as harsh as the polar sea, creature perceptions of potential prey are amazing, including sight, smell, vibrations and who knows what else.
Possibly the choice of words in the narration was awkward, considering it lures prey.
