depends on the company. overall OTR truckers are the the highest job in demand. I saw it on a newscast on youtube. the job isn't what you think. it's a lot tougher then most rookies think.

Are the wages that low or the job conditions really so bad there is a recession looming things could radically change.

Seems pretty odd that they would have you for orientation if they didn't like your work background. I have faith that they'll keep you though considering they started out with 5 new guys and ended with only 2 at the end of the FIRST day. As already said the 13 speeds will grow on you but any manual is better than an automagic anyday just ask seansuth :)
