A short video on how I add sheet metal screws to running shoes for added traction on ice and snow in the winter.

NEED:
Shoes - old pair would work fine
Sheet metal screws with 1/4" head.
1/4" length for forefoot area
3/8" length for mid foot and heel
1/2" length can be used for thick areas of heel
Nut driver or socket for 1/4" screw head

OPTIONAL
Power drill (use safety glasses)
Nutdriver attachment for 1/4" screw head

Put screws on bottom sole of shoe towards the outside edges. Avoid putting screws on the tip of the toe area. Place screws on prominent areas of sole not in crevasses or recessed areas.

This is the third season I have used screws in my shoes and I have yet to have one fall out. When I use a power drill - I make sure not to over tighten (and use eye protection). Use the drill to start the screws and use a nut driver to tighten them by hand. If you over tighten you will remove material (rubber) which will increase the chance of the screw falling out.

  • Not is you use the shorter ones. Also, if you keep then on the outside of the sole there is not chance of them poking through.

  • how good are they for walking on patched snow/slippery ice sidewalks?

From my experience - They are better than not having them. I have run on black ice with them which is a little tough - but better than not having them. White ice is not a problem. I did have a problem in spring when the snow was melting and there were bare areas of tarmac - you could feel the screws wearing down quick.

  • Are the screws not long enough to poke through to your feet then?

  • Hex head sheet metal screws, the ones where the heads on them are VERY sharp, sharp enough to cut you, are simply not made anymore.

    .

Ever hardware store i`ve been to makes the hex heads with rounded edges now. Simply of no use on ice.

  • Thanks for the video! Will be doing soon!

  • Very good
