The number of homeless families is on the rise across the United States. One of the areas with the biggest increase is Washington D.C., the nation's capital. Over the last year a regional government planning agency says the number of homeless families increased by 15 percent in the DC area , the biggest jump in years. Many experts blame the nation's economic downturn as well as a local high cost of living. VOA's Chris Simkins reports on homless families and groups that are helping them.
@joanlillianrose you ever think there is 25 times more whites in america, but blacks collect 33% of welfare. therefore 4% of the population is collection 33% of the welfare. My ignorant thought is get rid of welfare altogether. Make it a work for food program! No cash, food only!

@troybrownrigg Well, I think you sound VERY ignorant due to the fact that there are MORE WHITE < Black on WELFARE!!! Can we think of larger cities where the populations of Blacks are slim to none? Name some black people who are living in mountains? We are SMART people take a look around.

@troybrownrigg Well that's probably a good thing as if it keeps up we will all be living out of boxes on the streets of the USA and be completely forced to depend on BIG BROTHER> Looks like communism way of life is moving to america. Take a look A From Freedom to Fascism. And The End of America, this is serious folks, may be a laughing matter if you are middle class and still doing ok, but a hard long bumpy road lies ahead of this nation and its people for the next 10+ years. Good luck.

I think all blacks should refund all the welfare and food stamps they've recieved to the US government that would pay off the national debt. That's too much like right!!! P>S anyone on drugs shouldn't recieve a penny.

I live at The Times Square, a building that houses single people, with services for those who have problems. 50% of the 650 are formerly homeless. I was classified as such, although I had friends as a safety net. I can say that the most important thing to avoid long-lasting homelessness is to support drug and alcohol abstinence. I've seen more sorrow over this, than over all other factors, combined.

The U.S. GOV. should cut a 2 Million Pound check for all decendants of African slavery thats were born and raised in the U.S. and give them WORLD WIDE Diplomatic status and this would take a BIG DENT out of the homeless problem.... OH!!! But wait a minute....Thats too much like right!!!
