This track comes from a post-rock band, Bark Psychosis. Released in 1994, the album that Absent Friend comes from is considered by some to be one of the more seminal post-rock albums. This song in particular pulls inspiration from a couple of different styles, namely jazz and psychedelia. There's a pretty heavy dream-pop influence on the track also. 9/10

  • Enjoyed the review, ignore the humourless dick beneath this. I think the instrument that 'sounds like a kazoo' is a melodica, could be wrong though,

  • Yeah I wish I knew what it was. It really lends to the song. Thanks for the comment!

  • wow great review

    5 stars

  • Bark Psychosis are absolutely one of the great bands of this era. Amazing guitar sound. I used to watch them play music at my school assemblies...!

  • @sevendaughters

i think you're right. it is a melodica. it's just been modified in the studio. this album relies heavily on sampling, so it might be a sample of a melodica.

  • i don't know why all these ppl are complaining. hell, you reviewed one of the most obscure songs possible. even though i've got nothing to gain from it, thanks for listening man. i'm glad you enjoyed the music. nice review!

  • I also think the deeper scraping noise is a hippo tube, which Andy Moor of The Ex and Dog Faced Hermans - but more famously, the Blue Man Group - uses. The bendy plastic pipe that cable guys use.

  • oh how typical, jumping on the polar extremes and black-white dogma of the greatest or the worst. grow up. music isn't a competition. nonetheless, your apology is accepted.

  • You know what, you're completely right. I'm sorry I ever went up against someone who obviously knows a lot more about music than I do. I hope that someday, I will realize that Bark Psychosis is the greatest band that ever walked the face of the earth, and their contribution to music as a whole, while virtually unnoticed, was outstanding. My apologies.

  • ooo, pretentious, another hip buzzword that's popular nowadays. tell me, what is my pretense? and a bark psychosis fanboy? seriously? you do realize that virtually noone knows about this band, right? you can't even recognize what a milestone the album was for music. like kind of blue did for jazz, it changed things forever. it's pretty obvious you have no idea what you are talking about. anyway, i'm off to the library, good luck with your revolution, faux-che.
