Here it is - a special Halloween and 4th Fuzzy Anniversary Treat - not a re-creation, but an original opening to Creature Features - WGN Channel 9's showcase of scary movies.

Also included is the only other authentic video footage of Creature Features currently known to exist - an excerpt from a 1973 internal WGN-TV Sales Presentation.

Quad Tape version directed by Ron Weiner. Editing by Vince Humphries. (back when Quad editing was quite a masterful feat!)

  • where's the opening poem? 'gruesome ghouls and grisly ghosts'

  • @fgreen67 - Those were added live, or from a separate audio cart. This was just a master quad reel of the opening scenes and music - not a complete off-air example of a Creature Features opening, unfortunately. But at least it is authentic.

  • It was a treat for me to get to stay up on Saturday nights as a boy to watch Creature Features, until I realized how scary those old horror flicks were. It would get to where I'd leave one of my eyes open -- the one in view of my parents -- but clamp the other one shut, as if that would lessen the fright.

    Great memories. Thanks for posting.

  • @PeerlessPaavo And here, I thought I was the only who did that as a kid during Creature Feature! *whew*

  • The theme was from "Experiment in Terror" which starred Glenn Ford, Lee Remick, Ross Martin, Stephanie Powers, San Francisco and Candlestick Park.

The closeup shot of Bela Lugosi as Dracula - was he laughing, crying or both?

One of my brothers used to joke that the image on the title card was Tony Esposito throwing up his gloved hand to snare a slapshot. During hockey season, WGN-TV mostly had the Blackhawks vs. the Bluesers or North Stars. The latter meant a whole lot of Buster Harvey!

  • Watched CF every Saturday night on an old black & white TV in my room. Could never sleep afterwards but great memories.

  • @PeerlessPaavo

good point and me too i had to stay up every sat* with my popcron an let the show go on, my mother got me into it she too liked monster movies when she was still wt us , yep brings me back to the day

  • Not bad but the orig. video was 30 seconds long and the opening starts with the sun going down and wolf howling and coffin opening slowing, etc, etc, etc.

  • where is EVIL BRAIN FROM OUTER SPACE where they show a segment of the movie, then it goes into the 'slide' before it goes into commercial?

  • Awesome! Thanks.

  • They really picked some awesome artistic angles in the opening. Awesome!
