Yes, I agree. Most of Kubricks later films are slow, mannered and unconvincing. Fitzcarraldo (and my personal favourite: Aguirre, the Wrath of God) gives a real visceral impression of danger, obsession, madness, strength and torment.
By comparison, all Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut gives the impression of are boring people walking around with bored looks on their faces.
@Guedingen ... I agree with you. If Fitzcarraldo had been directed by Kubrick, everyone would have taken notice BUT I don't believe Kubrick would have done AS good or as well
Love the way Mark bluntly says "NO!" after Werner says that they're not very friendly towards him.
