Joan Sutherland considered "Addio del passato" her favourite part of La Traviata. She also expressed that she loved the role of Violetta Valéry most because of the fact that the character is a normal woman who lives all the tragedies and problems of real life. Sutherland's sympathy for the role is beautifully demonstrated in this amazing rendition of "Teneste la promessa... Addio del passato", from an in-house recording.
Sutherland dominates all the skills to enhance the dramatic power of this aria, using her vocal power and squillo to the best effect, especially in perfect and intense crescendi notes. In my opinion, she was even better at this performance than in the broadcast recording with Pavarotti as Alfredo (here, her partner was Bergonzi).
