These girls are a stunning reminder of what music was in our time...when innocence was still believable..all from Baltimore, named after the historic Royal Theater on Pennsylvania Avenue...the lead singer worked for a time at the Playboy Club downtown, all were/are classy ladies who filled my radio and teenaged dances with beautiful wonder.
i remember hearing this on the porky chedwick show in pittsburgh, mid 60's for the first time,on vaction and this song has stuck with me alllllllllll these years and so has the orig mgm 45.
I guess I'm just partial (actually infatuated) with the singing ability of Sheila Rossof the Royalettes. I also like very much Arlene Smith (Chantels), and I think too that there's a difference in the quality of recordings between 1957 and 1964. So Arlene is put at a disadvantage, being a mere "Brill Bldg" girl. Now laura Nyro & Patti are about perfect, as you say. Patti was great in "56 when she started. My problem is I'm a purist and tend to try to split hairs. I love "em all .
I love the Royalettes !
