Menhaden harvest

I shot this video of a purse seining operation sucking a net full of adult menhaden on board just off Scarborough Beach in southern Maine. Menhaden are a significant component of the ocean food chain and there is concern that their stocks are being depleted. Menhaden are commonly used for commercial bait and are processed for fish oil (Omega 3). Cat food and fertilizer are made from the solids and the scales are used in cosmetics (nail polish, lipstick, etc.).
