Bad As Me, AntiRecords 2011.
Tom Waits - guitars, vocals, piano; Gino Robair - violin; Augie Meyers - accordion; Marc Ribot - guitars; David Hidalgo - violin; James Whiton - bass, Will Bernard - guitar.

Bad as Me is Waits' first proper collection of studio material since 2004's Real Gone (in 2006, he released Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, a 3xCD mélange of lost-and-found tracks). He's backed by a cabal of familiar, gnarly-faced noisemakers (David Hildalgo, longtime bandleader Marc Ribot, Keith Richards, Flea), and again shares writing and producing credit with his wife and frequent collaborator Kathleen Brennan. Waits' jerky grandpa bark, which he'd honed and perfected by his mid-twenties, was reverse-engineered to age well. Now, perhaps freed from the burden of approximation, he sounds especially wild and gleeful, hollering with deranged aplomb. Bad as Me is as essential - and as essentially weird - as anything he's done before.

Bad as Me comprises mostly love songs: paeans to lasting love, the kind that changes and bends.

  • What a beautiful song. Then just when you think the song is finished. That piano comes in at the end, it's just sublime, its perfection.

  • Brilliant song. I was looking for this yesterday (I have it on cd but I was too lazy and drunk to go down stairs and play it) but I couldn't find it anywhere. Cheers man.

  • my favorite song off this record.

  • Good god, what a great song. Even when Tom is breaking my heart --which is just about every song -- it's a sweet, warm pain.

  • She doesn't kill herself. " I've sewn a little luck up in the hem of my my gown" the next stage on wheels is a stage coach gettin out of town fast.

  • @PERAGR0 So it's a song about a girl away from home. It seems as though she is sent to the gallows. So I think the wheels belong to a cart carrying her body.

  • The best song on Bad as Me, and one of Waits best songs ever.. simply amazing.

  • He's the greatest. Look at the iTunes Top 10, listen to the previews, and come back here to get over the disappointment you'll feel at the modern world.

  • @PERAGR0 My guess is that he is looking at something like a group of traveling minstrels and admiring the simplicity and honesty involved in said production. I think he's comparing the beauty and honesty conveyed in this type of performance venue (on the streets) vs. that of the limelight where one gets easily caught up in overproduction and the true essence and intentions of one's music become obscured. I have many friends who have left the stage for the streets to find themselves

  • hope.

  • favorite song on bad as me.
