I may sound like a noob but what exactly is a pad? Like where does it originate from?

@gumdrops27 a pad is a legato (sustained) instrument often used to play chords (more than one note simultaneously ). The sound originates from what is called an oscillator on a synthesizer. An oscillator usually gives you a choice between several basic wave shapes to choose from such as sawtooth, square, triangle, sine/parabola. in this case i'm using fruity 3xosc which gives you 3 oscillators to layer on each other. however many more complex pads will play many modulating oscillators.

think of "digital cellos or violins" a violin sounding synthesizer patch could be called a pad. it is just a common term used for electronic music instruments that play the chord progression in a sustained legato format. pads usually have multiple parameters being tweaked over time on each oscillator to create effects and environment sounds.
