The Weepers - your urban folk

For all who still feel their country roots, but are deeply bound to urban living. What comes to our mind, when we enter an old, empty, country house?

Inspired by the traditional Slavic folk songs sung during funerals, army call-ups and other important events, The Weepers seeks parallels with today's world -- what brings comfort to us now?

The Weepers is SKUTR's latest project in their four-year period as artists in residence at the Archa Theatre in Prague, labelled by The Guardian 'the Alternative National Theatre'. Certainly the most famous Prague theatre in the international field, the Archa Theatre hosts and supports the best of contemporary European theatre and music. The Weepers merges physical theatre, live singing, humour and dynamic choreography.

The two directors behind SKUTR, Martin Kukučka and Lukáš Trpišovský, are among the leaders of the new generation of Czech theatre makers. Their crossover work combines physical theatre, acrobatics, drama, music and puppetry. Awarded the Jury's Grand Prix in Belgrade's FIST Festival and the Audience Prizes in Belgrade and Prague, their qualities are also being recognized by Czech critics, with three consecutive nominations for the Best Newcomer of the Year. Prague Post writer Steffen Silvis dubbed them "the two young geniuses".

To find the links to contemporary urban life SKUTR have added a new dimension to The Weepers. In addition to the physical theatre for which they are renowned, the directors have incorporated a strong musical element to the performance, which the actors have prepared with painstaking care. "The SKUTR ensemble (which includes the company's young wizards Martin Kukučka and Lukáš Trpišovský singing)is in top form," says Steffen Silvis in the Prague Post.

"They use the phraseology of physical theatre and the setting guarantees rhythm, tempo and energy. But they wouldn't be SKUTR if they didn't bring in winning humour, playfulness and metaphor," adds the reviewer Jana Machalická in Lidové noviny.
