Football is littered with players who have never recovered properly from disastrous injuries (Michael Owen, Alan Shearer, Marco van Basten); the astonishing twist when it comes to Ronaldo is that even though he wasn't the same player, he was still more gifted than most.

Quotes:
''Celades played with him, and said he would just pick a ball up in training, beat 10 men and score. They could not get the ball off him. When players like him, and someone like Paul Gascoigne to a certain extent, get a lot of injuries they just lose that yard of fitness and pace. And it does affect them.
But that's not the bigger picture. His goals record at World Cups is amazing and his scoring rate at each and every club was exceptional. Compared to say Jurgen Klinsmann, Thierry Henry, or even Marco Van Basten, I'd put him way, way above all of them. '' - Steve McManaman
"I firmly remember how he was sitting on the treatment table putting on a bandage in the dressing room only days before he helped us to victory in the Brazilian Cup and the Campeonato Paulista.
"From now on, he will be considered as a legend of the game and he will join many others from the past who have filled us with joy with their masterpieces. Fortunately for us, stars come and go in Brazilian football. Those who enter the stage will learn from those who starred before them, like Ronaldo. His faults? Every human has his mistakes and that's what I saw in Ronaldo; that he was a human being.
"It's now up to us to repay Ronaldo for everything he has done for us. We'll have to minimise the empty feeling he probably has and he deserves the affection of all Brazilian football fans. Being successful has always been his trademark and we can only hope that he will soon be active in the football world again in some position.
"In this world, friends will come and go, doors will open and close and you win and you lose titles. However, life goes on and you realise that more than anyone else." - Coach Mano Menezes
one of his childhood idols was Ronaldo Luiz Nazario da
Lima. Alexis always found the Brazilian, who also played for Barça, to be a
'phenomenon' and modelled many things on his hero. - Alexis Sanchez

Recently retired football legend Ronaldo has been honoured with a pair of golden boots.
During his visit to Nike HQ, Ronaldo received a pair of golden Mercurial R9s.
According to Nike, Ronaldo received the boots "in honour of his winning football history and his help in developing the fastest boot on the planet."
Ronaldo, who scored 62 goals in 97 Brazilian caps and 83 goals in 127 matches for Real Madrid, debuted the original Nike Air Mercurial boots at the World Cup in 1998.
"From his first Mercurial to his last, Fenemeno's legacy lives on," the Nike statement concludes.

''I have said many times that Ronaldo is the best striker
i have ever seen playing. I have never seen anyone like him.
We never played against each other in the national teams,
but i remember when i went to Brazil and we played
at the Deco-foundation and we also played
a table-tennis game. I wont even say who won, but i will keep this day in my memory.'' - Messi
''He was always an example for young people to lok up to for the
way he overcame adversity. He was always an idol of mine and will always be my friend'' - Ronaldinho
"I want to thank Ronaldo very much for everything he meant to players of my generation.'' - Cristiano Ronaldo
"Ronaldo is the man and I don't care what y'all say. [He's the] best striker ever, hands down, and anyone who doesn't agree has problems."
-Jozy Altidore
"If you introduce me to Ronaldo, I swear I'll behave until I give up playing football.
"I have never met him, but when you see the idol of a lifetime it can change you. It can change your way of being.
"I don't know how I can explain it. There are many great players, but Ronaldo was the greatest and so one word from him is worth more than a thousand of all the others." - Mario Balotelli
At 9:58 min: This celebrating-scene totally reminds me to Ronaldo celebrating a goal against Manchester (in CL) during his hat-trick :)
