marty is just a better ballad singer, but merle can put alot emotion in a song. both very good singers and songs.
but i think merle just ripped some parts of this song from mr shorty.

@MrGerardnl I never thought about that but i agree, i can see the similarity. I love the mr shorty song it probably just beats Merle if i had to pick just one of the two, but both great songs.

@jmcfintona999 You'd have to ask Merle Haggard as he wrote it. My guess it is as much the story of a Dad having a favourite son, one who was a successfull athlete. And most American football players are well built. Taking more interest in that son and the other. Then realising Billy could show courage and heroism despite not being physically as tall or muscular than his other son. Thats the way i hear it.
