King George V, VI and Queen Elizabeth II has helped England sane during the insane 20th centuries that was Europe. WWI, WWII, political uncertainty in before plus after and the decline of the Empire.
You can argue they have bad moments like King Edward VIII, Princess Diana, support Hitler (before the war) etc. But overall, they did quite well.
Will they survive? That will depends on Prince Charles and Prince William. Like any monarchy in the world. their work will decide their fate.

I understand why Bill Maher doesn't like the Monarchy because of it's absolute power and privileges that is he think is unworthy. English monarchy is the target here because of the American fascination towards it.
But the real question is if the Monarchy is so outdated, why is it still so successful in England? They cannot declare war, raised any taxes and dictate any policies. Even the address to the Parliament is written by Parliament.
Unpopular monarchy will be overthrown like Nepal.

i do like bill maher, but I think he's missing the point on this issue and thats the simple fact that kate middleton isnt an incest spawn! the simple fact that the latest generation of the royal family is moving away from only marrying another lord or lady is PROGRESS. Thats one of the reasons that everyone was so excited for the royal wedding: She is from the "general public"!

the 420 reference was brilliantly done

As a Briton I will never swear alliegence to a politician, or to anyone who represents a political party - the point been that in Britain, Canada and a few other places, the head of state is seperate and above politics; No democracy is perfect, including the United States, and allthough I respect the American system, I much prefer our own system. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

Give me the Queen over any american prez any day. She is second to none God Save the Queen.

Bill is completely wrong about the reasons for the American revolution. The King could not start a war or imprison anyone without trial, he was subservient to parliament just as the queen is now. The american Bill of Rights is a copy of the English Bill of Rights from 100 earlier.
The revolution was about money and power, as are all major wars. It's strange that Bill doesn't know this....

And how does it all play out after almost 250 years? We have a dignified head of state with a legendary dedication to duty, whose council carries the weight of 60 years of political experience. For the past 12 years America has had two light-weight political opportunists, neither of whom I'd trust to hold my wallet.

Do like the way Bill holds up a mirror to the short comings of peoples hypocrisy and silliness. Keep it coming Bill.
An american president is to be addressed as "Mr. President" even if he is out of office, love of titles?

@BDeiste The Monarchy makes considerably more money than is spent on it and have no powers. It is an important part of the worlds history. It is a working however, and the royal family pretty much give their life up and work until death doing all the official head of state duties that would need doing if they were there or not - they are rich but I would never swap places for that for even more money than they have.
