  • It's true that kids need rules. But... I mean... just imagine if this was them being set into the real world (or college)... instead of candy and junk food... would it be drugs and alcohol?

You need to let your kids live at least a LITTLE BIT while you still are raising them. Otherwise when they are given a tiny taste of freedom, they'll go nuts with it.

  • Translation of dad's comments: "Kids enjoy candy and chips, eh? Who knew? I always assumed little kids wanted to grow up to be dull, self-denying scolds like dear old dad. Maybe I should hit them harder? Or more often?"

  • @Nightsparrow626 Excatly, all things in moderation.

  • This isn't really right. Sheltering kids their whole lives is a surefire way of making them give an explosive and unrestrained response the second all those rules are lifted. Of course they didn't show complete restraint--the kids were without rules for the first time in a long time. You can't fault them for LIVING a little.

  • @smaakaker exactly... i was sheltered and restricted so much growing up, as soon as I went to college I went insane with the parties and the alcohol. i'm not saying I should've been allowed to drink as a teenager in high school, but I think if I had had a little more freedom, my newfound freedom wouldn't be as exciting and intriguing. I'm a sophomore in college now, and I'm just starting to learn how to settle down and restrict myself

  • I watched this episode a few months ago and I did not care for either moms manner of parenting. You have 2 extremes and they both needed to find a happy medium, just my opinion, for what it's worth.

  • of course they don't have any self control here. they haven't been given the opportunity to develop self control.

  • uh yeah, kids, you need to be told what to eat, otherwise you wind up like the little butterballs that are packing our schools. Little pigs guzzling Twinkies in junior high...ugh. I feel like puking just thinking of the obesity epidemic in this country.

  • I love chili dogs. I love nachos.

  • lol i remember my parent's used to let us watch tv shows like unwrapped and how its made when my siblings and i were younger. lets just say we never ate peeps or little debbies agian...

  • Snack food doesn't have to be gross and full of chemical additives...

An occasional bar of chocolate or soda at a party will not hurt children (It's how I grew up) but constant junk food is dangerous. Diabetes? Obesity? No thanks.

  • Is the dad really shocked? When you let kids eat whatever they want OR restrict them too much, they are not going to learn how to deal. When you restrict too much, once they are free to make their own choices, most of them arent going to care what their parents told them. So eat well and healthy, and teach kids that sweets and junk are not healthy, but ok in small portions.
