they lost a lot of power in the song because you couldn't hear the little high notes at the end of the riff.

it's a shame the recorded version never matched this or the 2002 version. this is easily a very underrated song.

The line sung in this version is "You've let your/the people down". Hopefully that helps make more sense in the context of the song.
The ablum version lrics appears to be "Thom, oh the little ones".
