  • This was pretty interesting but considering my java dev experience I can get neither speed or scalability from java because the jvm consumes ram and ram is not infinite. I think this is just a reflection of the whole "Enterprise" languages dogma and their amazingness ;) . All I keep thinking about, is that the least scalable languages ROR/php are running the largest most transaction heavy sites in the world Facebook and twitter. I would like to see any java app handle that amount of traffic!

  • What you mean is "Ruby can't scale as WELL as Java". If you want something that scales well, use Erlang.

  • @madtrade facebook chat is actually based on erlang based Ejabberd XMPP server. Its not PHP at all. Talking about PHP, facebook had trouble with its slowness but they multiplied there servers and they aren't as instant as Twitter. If someone port facebook in rails it will run same + major problems these sites got is with database not with programming language.

  • @donkeysoft Java is the most used language on the planet after C/C++. The majority of companies have at least one system written in java, go figure. What some people find easy others may not, we just can't discuss taste and say which is easier to use.

  • @floopy312 Google App Engine runs java and has a free quota.

  • @lehphyro rather than focusing on components that are no longer technically php/ruby, maybe it is better to consider, if java is infinitely scalable and easy like ruby, then why are more site not written in it or converted to it? I am not arguing the performance of java but rather its usability, stability and requirement. When php can be compiled to c++, with tools like eaccelerator + just a few configuration changes then why would you not choose to use the simpler option?

  • @donkeysoft twitter doesn't use ruby for performance critical parts anymore, php is compiled to c++ before being executed at facebook, nice try though

  • @madtrade @madtrade @madtrade Yes, of course I have. In fact, chances are, you have used those applications without knowing that you are (much like people who use YouTube not knowing that they are actually using Linux - because that is what the servers run). If you have made telephone calls, there is a good chance that the switches that your call went through were run by Ericsson's software in Erlang.

  • @donkeysoft

twitter == was a fail with ruby on rails

java is way more prepared for handling criticals transactions.

facebook is not a hard site there is nothing terrible if facebook fail. it happen often and no one give a fuck. but take a look at facebook chat. since when this shit cant work ?

  • @therealmdhw

you heard of all those news product made in Erlang deployed worldwild ????

    no ?

    me neither !

  • Shut up gosling. java garbage is already dropping off the language map. You're history.
