We told you on Wednesday that Toyota has announced a recall of 3.8 million vehicles because a loose floor mat may have been a cause of more than a dozen crashes. Today we bring you more about what the danger is, and which Toyota models are being recalled.

Toyotas largest American recall is now underway. 3.8 million vehicles are affected.

The carmaker is having people who own these vehicles should bring them into their dealer to get a replacement floor mat: the Toyota Camry made between 2007 and 2010, the Toyota Avalon made between 2005 and 2010, the Prius made between 2004 and 2009, the Toyota Tacoma pickup truck made between 2005 and 2010, the Toyota Tundra SUV made between 2007 and 2010. Some Lexus models are also on the list: the ES350 made between 2007 and 2010 and the IS250 and IS350 models, both made between 2007 and 2010.

The concern is over floor mats that get stuck to the gas pedal, causing the car to speed up out of control.

[Akio Toyoda, Toyota President]:
"For the four people who lost their lives while using Toyota's cars, it's very regrettable. I would also like to give my deepest condolences."

Toyota says it is taking steps to make sure something like this never happens again.

[Akio Toyoda, Toyota President]:
"We are currently working with the National High Traffic Safety Administration in order to find the cause. We are also working towards taking preventive measures, but have not decided upon specific details and as such ask for more time."

The U.S. government said it has received reports of 100 related incidents that include 17 crashes and four fatalities involving Toyota vehicles.

The recall also comes at a critical time for Toyota as it scrambles to squeeze spending to bounce back from record losses forecast this year amid a global slump in car sales.

I wouldn't dare drive a faulty car back to the dealer. I'd get them to come get it!
