Here Sylvester Gurruwiwi (RIP gutharra) demonstrates 3 versions of a ceremonial song, specifically, a slow, medium and fast yidaki rhythm that accompanies the song. Notice how the clapstick pattern, beat, and timing stays the same? Only the yidaki rhythm has increased in tempo.

For tips and other secrets on traditional style yidaki playing, check out the iDIDJ Forum:

  • hey Guan!! lovelly vid!!!

Was it Alfred in the back??? what 2 great losses...!! Sylvester was an ace person and Alfred had the most powerful voice...

I believe both bilma and yidaki stay together, slow in the beginning, faster at the end, but it's the accents of the yidaki that make it sound as if it went faster while the bilma didn't.... i think the set of two breaths in the faster version is moved a little bit ahead than in the slower, but they're structurally the same...

  • @rarrk in the slower version it gives you the feeling of a 6/8 pattern whereas in the faster it's slightly clearer as a 3/4 beat

  • @rarrk interesting stuff...

  • @rarrk yup alfred was in the background, sitting on the sofa n watching tv. hey your ideas and comments are very interesting, do you want to discuss it more on the iDIDJ Forum? could help ppl work out what is happening... cheers marcos!
