Teaching back up knots, or calling it that is not a good term, People will freak out when they see it coming undone on the way up becaue they think there back up is failing, WHAT is it backing up. a correctly tied Eight does not fail so no need to back it up, Teach that and thats all that matters, Buddy check, and go.
