Wow there are a lot of ignorant comments and gross generalizations on this post.
Don't need no stinkin' Sheriffs? Then welcome federalized policing (MILITARY) or anarchy. The Sheriff's Office is the oldest policing force in the United States. It IS our history. No Sheriffs? Then meet all those criminals that are being guarded in jail by Sheriff's Deputies. More people die in motor vehicle accidents than die by gun violence (Nearly 4x: ~40000 to ~10000). This is why LEOs enforce traffic regs.

Does Bakersfield require 500 sheriffs (not deputies)?
Could other Bakersfield's civil jobs be eliminated, especially supervisory and director jobs?
How does pension of retired Bakersfield civil servants play into the expenses of Bakersfield?
