  • @Jeansschwimmer Jesus, the waste of materials never ends :( ....Think of how many uboats could have been made if things like The Altantic Wall, V-1 and V-2, and all the useless ships.....Britian would have fell....oh well, peace man

  • @sheemsheem Want to know more about more waste? The project of a German aircraft carrier: Graf Zeppelin.

It was never finished, its engineless hull was towed to the Soviet Union after the war.. What the hell could you do with one aircraft carrier? I can well imagine Raeder wanting such a toy as the other boys in his playgroup had toys of that kind, too.

Dönitz wanted to scrap the capital ships, but -as usual- Adolf would not listen.

  • @Jeansschwimmer

I know the story. They could have given it to the Marinebund in Wilhelmshaven or to private ownership. As you said, the battlecruiser was 60 years old and stood for the first world war, not the second. In this case I don´t care for the world´s opinion, if there would have been any, what I doubt. Besides that I´m pretty sure that there are enough voluntaries that would love to care for a ship like that. It would have been a unique museum for old technology.

  • @anonymusum When the Turkish navy decommissioned their 60 year old training vessel, the ex-SMS Goeben, they asked the German government whether they wanted dit back- for nothing!

In Bonn they only shrugged their shoulders, and the ex Goeben was sent into the steel furnace.

I cann well think of the two thoughts they had had in 1972:

    a) How big are the costs for preserving a World War I heavy cruiser?

    b) What would the world think if "we" had accepted that gift and brought the Goeben back.

  • @VieuxCharlesXIII I agree, I always think Tirpitz and Bismarck was such a waste....many many uboats could have been made...

  • @michaelwright999

I´m not sure, but i guess not. Just ask at the US Government. But Im also not sure if it is radiating or not.
