Actually. You can do portrait mode with it without the ballhead. Though your lens will only be some 3 inches off the ground.
Basically what you do is you bend two of the legs (those on the side of the camera you want to face down) directly outwards from the center then fold them in a 90 degree angle upwards, along your camera body. Then you adjust them, by moving them outwards from the center of the tripod, 'till you get a perfect portrait mode, and voila.
Hard to explain, but easy to do : )

I have one of these for my point and shoot, hope to use it in Rome and Venice next summer at night too-I visited Florence this year on a tour-a bit busy during the day though.

I have this and it's great, but I will say it caused me quite an amount of embarrassment at the airport when I was traveling to the UK and was asked to step aside and become searched. They took this out of my bag and thought it was a sex toy. I was receiving stares from all sorts of people and made for an unpleasant plane ride. Make sure your ready for weird looks with this thing.

has to be said it is much more useball with the ballhead. Without it, you miss a LOT of movement possibilities

just bought myself one USD51.56 in Malaysia
I note you have not use a heavy camera here, I thought you had a 40D not a 400D as the shot shows in ACR?

@devonmale69 I have several bodies. That is a Canon 400D & 24-105L you see in the video.

Great video as usual Gavin. But if the Gorillapod is not the best travel tripod which one would you say is the best?
