1978 Blizzard in Dowagiac Michigan
3 pictures of the huge amount of snow that the great blizzard of 1978 gave Dowagiac Michigan.
My parents ran what was then known as the Skyline Motel on M-51 1 mile south of town.

my dad told me stories of the winter of 78' he was 6 in Elkhart IN. he was jumping on top of a giant snow drift and kept going a little deeper each time. when the snow got to his knees he suddenly sank to the bottom. he tried to climb out for hours but just packed him him deeper. finally his brother found him and dug him out. he could have died lol thank god he didnt or i wouldnt be here

We lived in Detroit. I don't think we got hit as hard as western Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. I would have been 5 months old. My dad took some 8mm movies of the storm. If I can find them I'll post 'em.

I was very fortunate not to lose power that day. 60 mph wind and wind chills of -60°.
There were people in trailers who froze to death without heat. I had to climb out a window and shovel snow away from the door to open it! Hope we never see that again.

Interesting pictures. Every summer for like ever from the 1980's till the early 2000's I spent summers at my grandparents cottage on Magician Lake in the Sister Lakes area not to far from Dowagiac.
