I've also had decent results on my '83 Elite with the bridge resting on the body like this, but it was always a nightmare in a floating setup. Installing a graphite nut + staggered locking tuners and removing the string-trees helped a lot, but the key to a decent result turned out to be to replace the saddles with a set of graphite-based ones from graphtec. They improved the sustain and the strings move so smooth across them that the guitar now also works properly with a floating bridge.
I'll second your sentiments! I have an '83 Strat Elite Sunburst with the Freeflite Trem and it NEVER goes out of tune! ..... you just have to not be a dope and SET IT UP RIGHT in the first place!

This trem system has a really bad rap for not staying in tune. I for one dug this vid.... Trem sounds good to me...
