Thanks for this, as you can imagine it brings back memories, sad, but at 19 my heart was broken...........love the song and Mr Laine is the best

Ruggerio Leoncavallo's early twentieth century "La Mattinata" set to mid-century American lyrics. Frankie does it by the numbers, though his version is certainly better than the Ink Spots' travesty with the whiny fiddle. But for pure sentimentality and beauty (and what else, really, do you want from an Italian ballad), I'll take Dean Martin's rendition every time.

What a voice so distinctive, yoy knew it to be Frankie Laine

Yes, he was born Francesco LoVecchio in Chicago almost 100 years ago. His idol was the great Al Jolson.

This is excellent, but the two best I've heard are by Vic Damone and Eddie Fisher. Both are on youtube.
A nice song, sung by a nice Italian boy

Frankie does such a great job with this old classic. I heard The Ink Spots sing this on an old album my relatives had in their music collection.
It's nice to hear Frankie sing a ballad. This song is kind of sad but it does have a positive message over all. Thanks for posting - Paula
