This clip is from the 2007 WGBH Boston NOVA PBS program, "Solar Energy: Saved By the Sun" which documents how solar energy is being used around the world in addition to the future of solar energy technology. The introduction of nanotechnology in solar energy production will dramatically lower cost and increase efficiency. As I talk about in my books, imagine a world where cars, houses, buildings, streets, signs, billboards, airplanes, and virtually everything else is painted with energy-collecting solar nano-paint. It is all very exciting, and could very well prove a viable alternative to finite fossil fuels.

  • It has been 4 years since this was filmed!

    Where is this product ?

  • @HeavyMechanics But It is unlikely to become financially feasible without economies of scale. The oil industry has over 100 years of development behind it and that is why it always appears to be cheaper in initial financial analysis. Someone with money just needs to take a punt.

  • @Playboysmurf1

Google "Paint-On Solar Power Is Inching Its Way Out of The Lab" for the most recent article

But really there have been SO MANY innovations in solar nanotech in the last 6 months alone that it's not a question of if anymore, but when.

As of may 2011, GE says that solar nanotech will be cheaper than fossil in 3 to five years. and China is currently quadrupling solar production, same thing in Germany, and the US.

  • 1:00 Tar paper that conducts electricity? Oh I see; it's a roof as a lightning rod!

  • I'm a UGA fan, but I'm proud to say I helped build GA Tech's "nanotech" lab. :)

  • @Playboysmurf1 It's research. It takes years for theoretical research like this to make it to markets, if it ever does. Sometimes while bringing something like this to market it is discovered not to be financially feasible. Remember to be developed into a product, something must first be profitable. An unfortunate byproduct of the capitalist world market we've set up for ourselves.

  • @robertrussell210 Have you found about about this ? Do you know which company is doing this?

  • I NEED INFO ON SOLAR PAINT PLEASE SEND ME A LIST OF COMPANIES IF YOU KNOW OF ANY THANKS

  • So who thought of this? Was it Ted Sargent?

  • Apart from the fact, that creating cheap solar-cell-foils to just glue to the roof is a lot better aproach, than having to paint your roof, this is pretty cool.
