On March 18, 2010, seven months before her "Honor and Excellence" speech, Professor Solita Monsod shared one like no other for her students. This was transcribed last March and it shows Prof. Winnie's nationalism--her undying love for the Philippines. The speech was for her Econ 100.1 students in UP but the message is universal, it is for the youth and everyone who loves the country. I posted this video in Prof. Winnie's approved Facebook fan page one day before the May 2010 elections for everyone to hear.
The first part of her speech was not recorded. Here it is:
FIRST PART
...Because if you don't help, who will? If you say the Philippines is lost then why are you here? You owe something to the Philippines. You owe something to the country. You're all being subsidized whether you're paying full cost or not, right? All of us!
What do we do for our country? And your best, best, best opportunity is the Elections. Don't just scratch your stomach. Guys, I'm going to tell you, you owe this country, I don't care where you are, you go to Hong Kong, you go to Singapore, you're rich, rich, rich, you're still gonna be a second-class citizen anywhere. ANYWHERE but in the Philippines. Think of what you can do for this country. You are supposed to be the creme de la creme for God's sake. The intellectual elite. And don't look at me like (imitates a student with jaws dropped) You are going to do your share for the country, you understand me?
RECORDED PART
You know what, when I die, you're going to be leaders of this country--(...)the community, private sector, government.
I'm telling you, if you do something that is against the principles, if you do something against this country, whether you are corrupt whether you leave the country, Mrs. Monsod is going to know about it! From beyond the grave!
And when you are there enjoying yourself without taking care of the country, Mrs. Monsod will come to visit you at the least expected time and a cold finger is going to touch you and say "What are you doing to help the Philippines?" Do we understand each other? Absolutely. I mean it, I'm going to talk and haunt you.
And by the way, one last request, when I die, I want you to pay me your last respects. You understand? You pay me your last respects by respecting this country. Do you understand? God bless you all.
(ROUND OF APPLAUSE)
