Try and count the number of times he says "Basically" and "Simply".
None of that was basic or simple.

we could've used that existing program, but we didn't want to, so we made our own tools

The funny think about doing this for a living is knowing that most of the times the actors gets the most pay, and do less mental and possibly physical work. Because without the people behind the scenes movies would be crap. But then again we all have heard the famous quote "that life is not fair".

I love seeing behind-the-scenes stuff like this, especially all of the techy stuff.

@MrSilami Of course but keep in mind that solid results of extreme complexity in thousands of shots (think Avatar) can only be accomplished if the pipeline is solid and the compositing is kept for enhancing, not replacing entire parts of the workflow. It walways depends on the task at hand, but the better the foundation the better the end result. So if you think something mediocre can be turned into gold, think that it should be gold to start with and polished to diamond.

@koyima Yeah, you got me there, I said that. It's just that I was confused that you compared VRay to Nuke. I agree that the 'fix it in post' attitude is getting more and more out of hand. On the other hand, Nuke in general, not referring to this very video, as part of a pipeline can drastically improve the quality of almost any 3D work. The more control you can give a compositor to tweak the final image, the better imho.

@MrSilami The idea is to get a pipeline in place, not "fix it in post" all the time. Now as tool to save some time when a pipeline is not correct or when an art director can't make decisions (which is his job), it is of course acceptable, but the truth is that the results achieved in this video are easily reached with modern renderers, especially when the subject is a character on footage. You were the one that said I was ignorant.

@koyima Just because I'm only a beginner and you've got some ZBrush experience doesn't mean your comment made any sense. Calm down, I see you're using Photoshop in your works too, does that make you lame? Nuke is just the same, only about a gazillion times as powerful! It does exactly what it's made for: save huge amounts of time. And no one tries to model in Nuke, so.. But from your second comment I see we agree. Not trying to flame or anything. The more power to the compositor the better!
Hello darshsadowgiratina if you go to The Foundry's website and select Nuke you can download the PLE version of Nuke to try. Thanks.
