Written by Steve Goodman (Go Cubs Go), and made famous by Arlo Guthrie in 1972, this version, sung by Jimmy Buffett (With accompaniment by Mac McAnally), was recorded at the very first concert ever played at Wrigley Field (Cubs Park) in Chicago, 2005, while sitting in the right field bleachers, as an encore.

The reason it was so emotional, as well as why Jimmy was wearing a New Orleans shirt was the fact that this was just days after Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast.

I am very proud to say that I was at this concert, watching it live. What an experience at Wrigley!

  • Do yourselves a big favor and watch Steve Goodman (the original songwriter) and Arlo Guthrie (the one who made it famous) sing this...Nothing but an absolute CLASSIC of American Music. It makes you feel like you are ON that train, living the songwriter's words...

    PERFECT songwriting....

  • this needs to be on ITunes

  • In 2004 I drove from Chicago to Urbana and heard this song. I could see the places referenced in this song and could understand this song so much. RIP Steve Goodman! Good cover JB!

  • Jimmy Buffett could sing Red Riding Hood and make it sound platinum

  • thanks for the info wizardofwaste - I've heard of the Panama Limited but never made the connection - Tom Rush has a song about the panama limited

  • @radh20 Back in the 70s, the train from Chicago to New Orleans was called the "Panama Limited". I think Amtrak changed the name to honor the song and songwriter; at least I like to think so.

  • Nice to see that JB sang the song the way Goodman wrote it. Hard to fathom that it has been 27 yrs since Steve Goodman died. His music still sounds just a good today as it did back then. Need to buy a new turntable so I can play my "Somebody Else's Troubles" lp. CD just isn't the same as vinyl with a Shure pick up and my Ultralinear speakers. :)

  • Amtrack stills runs the "City of New Orleans" a cool way to go to new orleans

  • @dcwoodsjr1 I was there too!

  • Love this DVD...When he played this at Jazz Fest in NOLA that year it was the best thing I've ever heard.

  • I was there that night! Awesome!!!!!!
