I was a CH47 Flight Engineer for 14 years...
Maybe, you needed better flight crews to maintain
the aircraft. I flew, in very cold weather, in the CH47.
Rare, that I seen a CH47, fail because of cold weather.
But, I was never stationed in Alaska. Long nights, and
too many bars to go to there, I guess. I always maintained
my aircraft, no matter where I was stationed, and there was many
very cold early mornings, heating up the rotor heads, with portable
heaters.

was stationed in alaska and the ch-47 was junck in the cold weather. Dont know if they improved them since, but are hueys would always have to fly more hours to pick up the slack cause they had so many chinooks broke out in the field.

yes, surprisingly, the small stretch of grassland there was just enough for its landing and generating lift.
