Aidan Hanson from Estherville, Iowa seemed to be a healthy boy until the fall of 2012 when he told his parents he heard a sound in his left ear. Doctors in Spencer, Iowa discovered a mass inside the ear and referred his family to UI Children's Hospital. Pediatric specialists were able to determine the mass was a very serious and extensive cholesteatoma, a non-cancerous tumor. Aidan's was determined to be the congenital variety, which meant that for six years, this growth had been filling his ear, destroying his hearing bones, growing all around his facial nerve, and filling the attic along his brain. Meet Aidan at www.uichildrens.org/2013-aidan.
