The SARA firmware has served us well. It has changed little since digital cable came out almost 10 years ago. On the newer boxes SARA is light and fast. But now I have got a letter in the mail saying that Navigator firmware is going to be flashed to everybody's boxes. I really doubt the older boxes will be able to run this firmware as fast as they could SARA.
This is on an Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250, one of the newer HD no-DVR models which flies on the SARA firmware. Id be worried if I still had a Explorer 2xxx or early 3xxx series HD box as these things are slow even on SARA at times.
Anyways, heres a tribute to this firmware before it is flashed away from boxes forever. SARA will probably live on with smaller cable companies, just like the old Weatherstar boxes. But the big companies are ditching it.
My Comcast boxes used to have this firmware, I miss it so much...

SARA was what Cox in Phoenix had for years (literally, circa late 1990s up until a year ago). But they upgraded to Passport because On Demand was the clunkiest thing on the planet with an extra app. Some old logos in there, too — some not used actively since the 1990s.

Right now Rogers (a cable company that operates in some of Canada's major markets) runs SARA still I'm told, except they've added this fancy looking "quick start" menu when the guide button is hit. Yet, everyone went up and arms when they did that cause Torontonians are all "OMGCHANGEGETITOFFGETITOFF", even after Rogers put in a option to disable it.
