Plácido Domingo's debut as Simon Boccanegra in Berlin (Oct. 24, 2009) became a huge success! More than 25 minutes of standing ovation, rhythmic clapping, stomping and Bravo-screaming proved that the audience liked the invincible tenor in a bariton role very much. Even though he is not a "real" baritone he won the hearts of the listeners with his unique, colourful voice and with his convincing acting. He is really an exception in every case and a living (and still wonderfully singing!) legend in music history! The rest of the cast (especially Anja Harteros and Hanno Müller-Brachmann) was also great! Solid performances by Kwangchul Youn (maybe a bit too "light" for his role) and Fabio Sartori (as Adorno). Sartori has a very good voice, but he is not the best actor and his appearance as "adorable lover" is not very ... ummmhh ... convincing. It would have been the perfect evening, if Plácido Domingo had ALSO sung Gabriele Adorno. :-) Daniel Barenboim and his Berliner Philharmoniker deserved the loud cheers - they were awesome!
